3.2. The title

It can be interesting to think about the title "Ommadawn". What does "Ommadawn" mean? Nobody knows. The word was invented by one of the female singers during a recording session. People have thought it might mean "amadan", "fool", but Oldfield denies this. The word was chosen because it sounded nice.

Another thing is that the album before this, "Hergest Ridge" (the name of a place close to Oldfield's home), was criticized as being out of place. Maybe Oldfield wanted to avoid a connection with anything special.

I think the title "Ommadawn" builds a mood around the album, a slightly mystical, seeking mood. "Dawn" as in sunrise means hope of something new.
