Q: Where can I find an updated version of this FAQ?

A: This document should be found as HTML at http://www2.united.dk/privateroom/lise/faq.html (here you have the choice to read all of the FAQ, the chapters you want to, or even a single question) and http://tubular.net/faq/SeeTheLight.html (excellent mirror, good if you just want to download the whole FAQ and read it offline). And at http://members.xoom.com/amarok/faq/ or http://members.xoom.com/germanbuela/faq.htm if you'd rather read it in Spanish! If you found this FAQ as HTML, it should be possible to save it as plain text (or whatever your browser calls it), and e.g. mail the resulting document to your www-less friends. You can send mail to Majordomo@ommadawn.cegep-heritage.qc.ca with the following in the body of the message:
get amarok Faq3.txt
Another possibility is to mail agora@capri.mi.mss.co.jp with no subject and this body:
www
send http://www2.united.dk/privateroom/lise/faq.html
(If you don't send this from your own account, or for some other reason ordinary reply doesn't work, substitute "send" with "rsend your@mail.address".) Finally you can mail me, the maintainer, for the newest version. If you found this document somewhere not the three sites above mentioned, you might want to check out, whether you have the newest edition. Right now I renew the FAQ every month or so.

Q: How do I make a suggestion for the FAQ?

A: Write me at lise42@get2net.dk. Any question with an answer not covered by this FAQ (including the discographies and other sources I point to) and/or raised on Amarok more than once, may be included in the FAQ, at my discretion. With credit to all who answered it that I know of.

Q: How do I get on the mailing list, Amarok?

A: Ah, yes...the mailing list. Send a mail to majordomo@ommadawn.cegep-heritage.qc.ca with one of the following texts in the message body.

subscribe amarok
Where you get every post separately. Please don't use this unless you really want to read and write often, it generates a lot of traffic.
subscribe amarok-daily
Where you get one mail each day, containing all postings of that day
subscribe amarok-digest
The same, only weekly
subscribe elements
The best from Amarok
subscribe amarok-ads
If you've got something Mike-related to sell/plug/advertise

Q: Where can I find the discographies? What do the discographies cover?

A: Before you say "Why would I want a discography?" please look at them. They answer a lot of questions, and not just about LP's and CD's. So - please, please, please, look at them! And with that said:

I can recommend the discography made by Lazlo Nibble, at the URL http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?oldfield. I've used it a lot, and I'm glad that it's not that large. Among its chapters are the liner notes from Amarok, "Television and Live Appearances", "Bibliography", "Oldfield Fanzines And Related Publications" and "Notes On Various Album Mixes". Especially that last one is good if you want to know the Boxed remix of TB, HR or O from the "ordinary" one. It's also searchable, for those looking for very specific things.

The one by Rainer Muenz (you can get this at http://home1.swipnet.se/~w-10081/discography/discography.htm. And find a searchable version at http://www2.united.dk/privateroom/lise/discog/) is longer and more detailed, and if you're really into collecting anything and everything that says Mike Oldfield, you want that one. It also has chapters called "Comments", comments about different covers, song versions etc... and "Labels", the label history, descriptions and comments. You can also get it by mailing Rainer himself. And you can also tell him to send you a new one every time he's made a new one, there's a sort of mailing list for this. The discography is rather long (about 500 kB), please check if you've got that much space before asking for one. Every known release is covered, from countries all over the world, releases where MO collaborated and so on. Even then you get it for free. All together there are more than 3500 items listed now (December 1997).
If you want to get this discography regularly, you should write an email directly to Rainer Muenz, rainer.muenz@urz.uni-heidelberg.de

Then I've also got to mention the video list Ralf Erhard compiled. It's about his personal collection, but even then covers a lot of ground. You should go to http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/8565/main.htm and follow the links to the video lists.

Q: Where can I find the lyrics for...?

A: A lot of the lyrics for MO's songs have been copied or transcribed, and put onto the net. Try these places: http://www.csd.uwo.ca/~pettypi/mike_oldfield/lyrics.html, http://tubular.net/lyrics/, http://home1.swipnet.se/~w-10081/lyrics/lyrics.htm, http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-43362/Hergest_Ridge/lyrics.html, http://www.fh-furtwangen.de/~krolla/songbook.html and http://members.xoom.com/germanbuela/letras.htm.

Q: I've got these albums, and now I'm wondering, what to buy next?

A: Difficult to answer that one, but if you want to know what people thought about the other albums, you could look at http://www.toucansolutions.com/oldfield/opinions.htm

Q: I want information about the people, who work(ed) with Mike Oldfield.

A: Try http://www.allmusic.com/, and type "Oldfield, Mike" in the field for major artists. This will give you a bio and a discography. Choose the record, you want to know more about. All the artists will be listed, and now you can choose to see the bio, a discography and so on for that artist.

Q: Have you noticed he quotes himself in...?

A: Probably. If you want to make sure we all know about it, read http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/cantate/moref.htm, The Complete Mike Oldfield Reference Guide. If you can't find it there: we (and Chris in particular) would like to hear about it!

Q: But what about...

A: I can't foresee every question. But if you have any unanswered questions, you can try the web site Amarok, at http://www.frisbee.net.au/amarok/. There's a description of MO himself; a long list of links to other sites (and a connected search engine); information about the people on Amarok; more links to discographies; articles, reviews and interviews relating to you guessed it; Chartland, with our votes for the best and worst by MO and a search engine covering the whole site.
